Intellectual Property for Researchers

Event Introduction:

This programme has been developed to increase the Intellectual Property (IP) knowledge and skills of doctoral and early career researchers. This FREE workshop will support:

• Researchers to understand IP and the role it plays in their research goals;

• Researchers to make educated decisions on the use and commercialisation of IP developed within their institution;

• Researchers to engage with their Technology Transfer Office (or equivalent) at appropriate times within their research

Intellectual Property is important when considering opportunities to create impact. Whether your goal is for cultural, social or economic impact, IP can support your outcomes. IP rights include:

• Patents

• Trademarks

• Copyright

• Design Rights

As a researcher it is vital that you understand IP, are aware of its implications for your research and identify and manage the IP arising from your scholarly activity. This workshop will also help you to understand the support available within the University with plenty of opportunity for reflection, discussion and questions.

This workshop is for researchers and PhD students from all academic disciplines. It will be led by Vitae, a global leader in supporting the professional development of researchers, in partnership with the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) and University of Birmingham Enterprise.

Agenda:

1030-1100: Introduction to IP, why it is important, and a background to the IPO; delivered by Dr Katy Mahoney

1100-1145: Overview of copyright – what is it, what can/cannot be copyrighted, exceptions and infringement

1145-1230: Overview of patents – what are they, why they matter, what is excluded, patenting process

1230-1315: Lunch break

1315-1345: Overview of registered design – the rules around it, practical examples

1345-1415: Trademarks and branding – the rules around it, practical examples

1415-1445: University presentation: how, when and where to go for support on IP related matters. Francesco Colachino, University of Birmingham Enterprise Ltd

1445-1515: Case study Daniel Hefft, University of Birmingham and Rheality Ltd

1515-1530: Final questions and close.

All participants will be asked to complete 3 surveys, as one of the IPO’s requirements for the project is to track impact. They are all online. The first survey should be completed when participants register. At the end of the workshop, 10 minutes will be set aside for participants to complete the survey before they leave. The final survey will be emailed to those who opt in 3 months after the training event.

The Barbara Hepworth Room is situated in Staff House, located on University Square, in the centre of campus. B15 2TT

Travel:

The room is a 6 minute walk from University Birmingham rail station. Trains travel from New Street station approximately every 10 minutes.

Parking:

Visitors should park in the University’s North East Car Park on Pritchatts Road, B15 2SA. This costs £2.50 per hour or £7.00 for up to 10 hours, using the RingGo cashless system. Parking here and on campus is free of charge after 6pm Mon-Fri, and on weekends.

Blue Badge parking for disabled drivers is available on campus, through the East Gate entrance on Edgbaston Park Road.

Travel Costs:

All staff employed by MICRA universities can re-claim travel costs. Please liaise with your own institution Technology Transfer Office (or Research and Enterprise Office) to approve your attendance and give you a charge code to claim.
